“You were born with the ability to change someone’s life. Don’t ever waste it.”

Hi! I am Dr. Karla Badillo-Urquiola (b-aa-d-IH-y-oh ur-key-oh-la), Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. I am the director of the EPOCH Research Lab.
I leverage my interdisciplinary background to investigate technology-driven solutions that improve the quality of life for underrepresented and underserved populations. I am an expert on adolescent online safety and wellbeing. Much of my work focuses on supporting teens living in foster care situations. My research is published in top-tier scholarly venues within the field of Human-computer Interaction (HCI). As a Latina woman in STEM, I am dedicated to mentoring underrepresented students on navigating the graduate school process in hopes of helping them find their inner strengths as researchers of color. My career aspiration is to be a tenured professor (a status shared by less than 1% of Latinas in the computing workforce) and help other Latina women reach this goal. I'm also determined to serve as a bridge that unites different cultures to advance the principles of diversity, inclusion, and equity. Conscious of my commitment, I am an active member of the SIGCHI Latin American HCI Community (LAIHC) and an advocate for minority HCI faculty and students. I earned my Ph.D. and Masters in the School of Modeling, Simulation, and Training at the University of Central Florida (UCF), where I was a McKnight Doctoral Fellow and Order of Pegasus Inductee (Class of 2020). I also earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Writing and Rhetoric from UCF. Beyond research and mentoring, I love spending time with my family. I am a mom of two beautiful girls. We love traveling, karaoke, and being outdoors! |
